A smart energy building

Responsibility and sustainable development

“Responsibility and sustainable development are some of the cornerstones of the new Isku Center. The comfort, efficiency and energy efficiency of the facilities represent the state of the art. The solutions designed and constructed for Isku Center by the energy service company LeaseGreen lower the CO2-emissions of the building by up to 90 per cent compared to other technologies used in similar buildings. The energy system of the building combines top level energy economy with good indoor air and a minimal carbon footprint.

“We call these solutions ‘smart energy solutions’. It is more than energy efficiency”, Hanna Eskola, quality and environment director of the Isku Corporation explains.

The energy economy of Isku Center is based on a very efficient geothermal heat pump system, which handles both heating and cooling of the building.

The capacity of the heat pumps is 1,050 kW, which is equal to the combined effect of geothermal heat pumps in more than a hundred single-family homes. The new system is backed up by a district heating system, which produces the performance that Isku Center needs on the chilliest days of the year. The solar panels installed on the roof produce electricity that is used for cooling the building and charging electric vehicles, among other things.

“Everything is designed so that the energy economy, good indoor air conditions and low CO2 emissions are as balanced as possible”, says Tomi Mäkipelto, CEO of LeaseGreen, who was responsible for the planning and design of the new energy system.

Electricity from green sources

“Through a unique, seamless collaboration between the use of energy and local production, we can minimise the need to buy energy externally. This lowers both costs and emissions. Isku Center also minimises the emissions from energy bought externally by buying from energy providers using green sources such as wind and water power and bioenergy”, LeaseGreen’s CEO Tomi Mäkipelto explains.
